Beyond HR How Sonal Helps Build a Thriving Crew Culture at Disney Cruise Line

Behind every unforgettable Disney Cruise Line vacation is a crew that feels supported, empowered and prepared to deliver exceptional experiences. Helping make that possible is the shipboard Human Resources team—a group whose impact extends far beyond hiring, policies and employee relations.

As Human Resources Manager aboard the Disney Destiny, Sonal partners closely with leaders across the ship to strengthen teams, develop talent and create an environment where crew members can thrive. From improving day-to-day operations to fostering meaningful connections, her work plays a vital role in shaping the onboard experience for both crew and guests.

Meet Sonal

Role: Human Resources Manager

Time with Disney Cruise Line: 8 months

Redefining What Human Resources Means at Sea

Many people assume Human Resources is primarily responsible for investigations, policy enforcement and disciplinary matters. While those responsibilities are certainly part of the role, Sonal says they represent only a fraction of what shipboard HR does each day.

"Our work is centered around people," she explains. "We partner with leaders across the ship, coach teams, support crew members through challenges and help create an environment where everyone can succeed."

Working onboard requires balancing operational priorities with crew wellbeing in an incredibly fast-paced, multicultural environment. Much of the team's influence happens behind the scenes—guiding leaders through difficult conversations, supporting crew members during pivotal moments, increasing engagement and helping departments make thoughtful decisions that strengthen both the crew experience and business performance.

Solving Challenges Through Collaboration

One project that highlights the collaborative nature of Sonal's role began with a recurring issue during embarkation. Crew members frequently visited the HR office needing help with internal Disney account setup, password resets and other basic system questions.

Recognizing an opportunity to improve the process, Sonal partnered with a Housekeeping Operations Assistant who had extensive knowledge of the ship's systems and workflows.

Together, they designed and delivered a practical learning session for new and returning Operations Assistants, equipping them with the skills and confidence to resolve common technical questions within their own departments.

The training focused on everyday crew support requests, troubleshooting techniques and navigating the systems crew members rely on throughout their contracts.

The results benefited everyone involved. Operations Assistants became more confident supporting their teams, crew members received faster assistance, and the HR team was able to dedicate more time to strategic initiatives while improving the overall crew experience.

Turning Crew Feedback Into Meaningful Change

Strategic decision-making is another key part of Sonal's role.

While reviewing departure survey results aboard the Disney Destiny, she noticed recurring themes that were affecting crew morale, retention and perceptions of leadership.

Rather than treating each concern individually, Sonal analyzed broader trends to better understand crew sentiment and identify opportunities for long-term improvement.

She collaborated with senior leaders to implement a proactive action plan that introduced stronger accountability, increased recognition for positive performance and expanded HR's presence throughout the ship. Through job shadowing, department visits and informal drop-in sessions, HR became more accessible and connected with crew members across all departments.

The initiative required balancing operational priorities, cultural diversity, generational perspectives and Disney's leadership expectations.

The outcome was clear: survey results improved, communication between leaders and crew members became more open, and crew members could see that their feedback directly influenced positive change.

Creating a Culture Where Everyone Belongs

Disney Cruise Line's shipboard culture is unlike any other workplace. Crew members from around the world live and work together while delivering world-class guest experiences in a dynamic environment built on teamwork, inclusion and safety.

For Sonal, Human Resources plays a central role in strengthening that culture every day.

She supports crew wellbeing through leadership coaching, employee engagement initiatives and fair, consistent practices while creating opportunities for crew members to feel heard, respected and valued.

Building trust is one of her highest priorities.

"I pride myself on leading with empathy," she says. "That helps me build genuine relationships with both crew members and leaders."

Outside of her formal responsibilities, Sonal embraces shipboard life by participating in crew activities, celebrating cultural traditions and remaining visible throughout the ship. Sometimes the smallest interactions—greeting crew members by name or asking about their day—can make the biggest difference in helping people feel connected.

The Most Rewarding Part of the Journey

One of Sonal's favorite memories has been witnessing the growth of the Disney Destiny crew from their early days together in the Eemshaven shipyard through today, watching them develop into confident leaders and professionals who create memorable experiences for guests.

The moments that stay with her most, however, are often the personal ones.

Crew members who once came to HR seeking guidance have later returned simply to say thank you—for listening, offering support and helping them navigate difficult situations.

After returning from vacation for a new contract, Sonal was welcomed back by countless crew members throughout the ship.

"It meant so much that people remembered me," she says. "Those connections remind me why this work is so rewarding."

For Sonal, success in Human Resources isn't measured solely by policies or processes. It's measured by the relationships she builds, the leaders she helps develop and the positive impact she can have on crew members living and working far from home.

Helping people feel supported, valued and empowered to succeed is what makes every day onboard meaningful.
