Disney Adventure Charting a New Course Documentary Coming to Disney+ November 28
Ahoy, Disney Cruise Line fans! A new documentary is taking viewers behind the scenes of one of the most unique ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Disney Adventure: Charting a New Course is set to debut on November 28, 2026, offering a closer look at the remarkable transformation that brought the Disney Adventure to life.
Announced by Disney Cruise Line's Singapore Instagram account, the original documentary will be available on Disney+, National Geographic TV, and JioHotstar. While details about the program remain limited, its subject is a fascinating story of an unfinished cruise ship that became a new chapter in Disney Cruise Line history.
From Global Dream to Disney Adventure
The Disney Adventure didn't begin as a Disney ship. Originally ordered in 2016 by Genting Hong Kong, the vessel was designed as the Global Dream. However, after Genting's financial collapse, construction came to a halt, leaving the massive ship partially completed.
In November 2022, Disney acquired the unfinished vessel through insolvency proceedings. The ship was approximately three-quarters complete, providing Disney with an unusual opportunity to bring a nearly built cruise ship into its fleet rather than starting entirely from scratch.
But transforming the Global Dream into a Disney cruise ship would require far more than adding familiar characters and Disney-themed decorations.
A Massive Transformation
According to a January 2026 Wall Street Journal report, Disney initially estimated that completing the acquired ship would cost approximately $1 billion. The acquisition price was reported at around $40 million, but extensive modifications ultimately pushed the total project cost to approximately $1.8 billion.
Beginning in 2023, Disney Imagineers and other project teams undertook an extensive redesign to turn a vessel originally intended for a different market into a family-focused cruise experience.
The work involved substantial changes to the ship's interior and public spaces, including expanding galleys, reworking structural elements, enlarging performance areas, and creating space for new entertainment experiences. Plans included a Marvel stunt show and 12 themed dining venues, including a Pixar-inspired buffet.
The transformation illustrates the challenge of adapting an existing ship to Disney Cruise Line's entertainment, dining, and guest-experience standards. Rather than simply finishing the original design, Disney had to rethink major parts of the vessel to create something that would feel at home in its fleet.
One of the Largest Ships in the Disney Fleet
At approximately 208,000 gross tons and 1,124 feet long, the Disney Adventure is a giant even by cruise ship standards. The vessel measures approximately 342.7 meters in length, with a beam of around 46.4 meters.
Disney has estimated capacity at approximately 6,000 guests based on double occupancy, with maximum capacity reaching roughly 6,700 passengers. The ship also accommodates approximately 2,300 crew members.
Its scale provides room for an extensive selection of entertainment, dining, and themed spaces. The Disney Adventure represents a different approach to ship design for Disney Cruise Line, with a layout and onboard experience shaped by its unusual origins and its role in the Singapore market.
The ship also features an advanced propulsion system. Although alternative marine fuels have been discussed in connection with its design, claims about its operational fuel use should be distinguished from confirmed details about its current service.
Disney Adventure Begins Sailing from Singapore
The Disney Adventure began its maiden voyage in March 2026 and operates from Singapore, offering three- and four-night itineraries that include days at sea.
The ship's Singapore homeport gives Disney Cruise Line a significant presence in a new regional market, introducing more guests in Southeast Asia to Disney's approach to cruising. Beginning in December 2026, the ship is also scheduled to introduce Langkawi, Malaysia, as its first port of call.
For Disney Cruise Line fans, the ship's journey from an unfinished vessel to a fully realized Disney experience is an unusual story of acquisition, engineering, design, and Imagineering.
When Can You Watch the New Documentary?
Disney Adventure: Charting a New Course is scheduled to premiere on November 28, 2026, on Disney+, National Geographic TV, and JioHotstar.
Although the full documentary details have not yet been announced, the subject alone makes it one to watch for Disney Cruise Line enthusiasts. The program offers an opportunity to learn more about how Disney took over a partially completed ship and transformed it into a vessel with its own identity within the fleet.
From its origins as the Global Dream to its new home in Singapore, the Disney Adventure has followed a very different path from Disney's other ships.
If the documentary explores the engineering challenges, design decisions, and Imagineering work behind that transformation, it could provide a fascinating look at what it takes to turn an unfinished cruise ship into a Disney experience.
