Disney Cruise Line Gives Back Crew Members Help Prepare Florida Classrooms for a New School Year
For Disney Cruise Line, the magic doesn't stop when a ship returns to port.
As teachers, students and families prepare for another school year, Disney Cruise Line crew members are once again stepping into local communities to help educators get ready for the classroom.
This year's back-to-school efforts included volunteer events in Florida, The Bahamas and Alaska, with Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS helping provide classroom supplies, educational resources, learning experiences and other support to children and educators.
One of the most meaningful stories from this year's effort involves a future teacher from The Bahamas who is spending his summer learning what it means to make a difference through Disney.
A Future Educator Gets a Firsthand Look at Giving Back
This year marked a first for Disney Programs, with students from the University of The Bahamas participating in Disney's Cultural Exchange Program.
Among the students was Turquoise, a music education student who joined the program at Walt Disney World Resort as a Quick Service Food and Beverage cast member.
Although his Disney experience wasn't taking place inside a classroom, Turquoise quickly discovered that many of the lessons he was learning at Disney could eventually make their way into his future career as an educator.
His summer experience also gave him an opportunity to participate in Disney Cruise Line's back-to-school community efforts.
Turquoise joined Disney Wish crew members at Supply Zone for Teachers in Brevard County, helping prepare thousands of classroom supplies for local educators ahead of the new school year.
For a future teacher, the experience carried particular meaning.
“My first passion was music, but I fell in love with teaching through volunteering.”
Turquoise explained that one of the experiences that had stayed with him was receiving an appreciation letter from a student he had previously taught.
That experience reinforced just how much of an impact educators can have on children.
His time volunteering with Disney Cruise Line gave him another perspective on that same idea—sometimes helping a student begins by making sure the teacher has the resources needed to do their job.
Disney Cruise Line Has Supported Supply Zone for Teachers Since 2012
Disney Cruise Line's partnership with Supply Zone for Teachers is not new.
The cruise line has participated in the organization's back-to-school efforts annually since 2012, with crew members donating their time and helping prepare resources for teachers and students throughout Brevard County.
Supply Zone for Teachers, operated by the Brevard Schools Foundation, provides free school supplies to educators across the county.
For teachers, programs like this can make a significant difference as they prepare their classrooms for a new group of students.
Nina Moser, director of development for the Brevard Schools Foundation, said Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS consistently arrive ready to help wherever they are needed.
Their teamwork and willingness to volunteer have made the partnership one that the organization looks forward to each year.
A Disney Cruise Line Crew Member Who Is Also a Teacher
The back-to-school event was especially meaningful for Disney Cruise Line Youth Activities crew member Becky.
Not only was this her first time participating as a Disney Cruise Line VoluntEAR, but she is also a teacher when she is back home.
That connection gave her a unique perspective on the importance of making classroom resources available to educators.
For teachers, having supplies ready at the beginning of the school year can mean spending less time worrying about what is missing and more time focusing on their students.
And for Becky, being able to help other teachers prepare for the school year made the volunteer experience particularly personal.
Lessons From Disney Can Make Their Way Into the Classroom
Turquoise's Disney experience also extended beyond volunteering.
While working at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, he found himself learning lessons that he believes can eventually translate into his future classroom.
He highlighted three particularly important areas: inclusion, safety and creating meaningful experiences.
Those principles may be associated with Disney theme parks and cruise ships, but they can be just as important in education.
For Turquoise, the summer provided an unexpected opportunity to connect his Disney experience with his future career.
“I never imagined I would work at Disney while studying education.”
His experience ultimately showed him how closely the two worlds can connect.
Disney Cruise Line's Back-to-School Efforts Extend Beyond Florida
Florida isn't the only community benefiting from Disney Cruise Line's annual back-to-school initiatives.
The cruise line continues to support students and educators in several of the communities where its ships visit.
Florida
In addition to the Supply Zone for Teachers partnership, Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS supported other organizations throughout Florida.
Crew members helped assemble food packages with the Children's Hunger Project in Brevard County and helped create learning spaces for educators at the Jack & Jill Center in Broward County.
Disney VoluntEARS also participated in STEAM-focused activities, community events and conservation education through partnerships that included Brevard Zoo and the Cocoa Boys & Girls Club.
The Bahamas
Disney Cruise Line has been supporting Bahamian students since 2023.
Efforts have reached communities including Nassau, Abaco and Eleuthera, where Disney has helped provide textbooks and school supplies to students.
This year's efforts expanded through The Play Project, which included projects such as improving play spaces, school beautification efforts and classroom supply kitting.
Disney Cruise Line worked alongside organizations including the Buddy Hield Foundation, love.futbol and Good Sports.
Alaska
For the first time, this year's back-to-school community efforts also extended to Alaska.
Disney Wonder crew members visited Harborview Elementary in Juneau and partnered with the Southeast Alaska Food Bank.
VoluntEARS donated boot and glove dryers, hundreds of activity bags containing books and games, and pre-packaged snacks for students.
And, naturally, there was a little Disney magic involved.
Students received a special visit from Captain Mickey Mouse and Captain Minnie Mouse.
Disney Cruise Line's Impact Goes Beyond the Ships
Disney Cruise Line's involvement in these communities is a reminder that the cruise line's presence doesn't end when guests disembark.
Through its VoluntEARS program and community partnerships, Disney Cruise Line continues to support organizations in the destinations where its ships sail.
From helping a Florida teacher stock a classroom to providing school supplies for children in The Bahamas and educational resources for students in Alaska, these efforts focus on creating opportunities for the next generation.
And for future educators like Turquoise, the experience provides something equally valuable: a firsthand lesson in how giving back can make a difference.
As Disney Cruise Line continues expanding its fleet and visiting new destinations, its community programs are growing alongside it.
