Disney Cruise Line Japan Is Officially Born: Oriental Land Creates New Subsidiary
On March 24, 2026, Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC) announced the creation of its new wholly-owned subsidiary, ORIENTAL LAND CRUISE CO., LTD., which will operate Disney-branded cruise services in Japan under the name Disney Cruise Line Japan.
This move aligns with OLC’s 2035 Long-term Management Strategy, aimed at diversifying its business portfolio for sustainable growth beyond its core Tokyo Disney Resort operations. The company plans to introduce Disney cruise vacations as a new growth pillar, with services scheduled to begin in Japanese fiscal year 2028. Establishing a dedicated subsidiary will enable specialized, agile management of the cruise business, accelerating its commercialization while maintaining close collaboration with Disney Enterprises, Inc.
The subsidiary is tentatively scheduled to be established on April 3, 2026. Ryotaro Shiiba has been appointed as Representative Director and President, and Charles D. Besford as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. It will be capitalized at ¥450 million (approximately $2.83 million USD), with its fiscal year ending March 31 each year. Key personnel, including directors and officers from Oriental Land Co., Ltd., will serve concurrently in the subsidiary. All initial business transactions will occur within the OLC group.
OLC anticipates that the subsidiary’s establishment will have a negligible impact on its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2026. Any material future updates will be disclosed promptly.
Disney Cruise Line Japan will function similarly to how Magical Cruise Company, Limited operates as the international arm of Disney Cruise Line — essentially a “doing business as” (DBA) structure under the Disney brand.
Regarding the vessels, Oriental Land Co., Ltd. is currently working with Disney Enterprises, Inc. on the detailed design, onboard entertainment, theming, and other features. The ships are being adapted from the highly successful Wish class to comply with Japanese registry requirements. Construction is set to begin in the second half of Japanese fiscal year 2026. (Note: The official announcement referenced ships in the plural, indicating potential for more than one vessel.)
This initiative will bring Japan its first Disney cruise experience, introducing families to immersive, high-quality family entertainment cruises in the domestic market starting in fiscal year 2028.
