From Cadet to Bridge Officer Alli’s Journey to Disney Cruise Line
Alli’s love for the ocean started early. Whether she was at the beach or out on boats, the water always felt like home. By high school, she was already working on charter fishing boats—an experience that made her career path clear. “There’s no place I would rather be,” she says.
That passion led her to enroll at Texas A&M Maritime Academy, where she built the foundation for her future at sea. There, she earned key certifications, studied navigation and safety, and gained valuable sea time aboard the TS Kennedy. She also completed a cadet contract on a passenger vessel in Hawaii, giving her real-world experience early on.
Beyond academics, Alli immersed herself in organizations that helped shape her leadership and teamwork skills. One standout experience was her involvement with Women Offshore, where she connected with women across the maritime industry. “My favorite was when our campus hosted the Women Offshore Conference,” she recalls. “Hearing from leaders in the industry was incredibly inspiring.”
Her introduction to Disney Cruise Line came at a career fair—an opportunity that perfectly blended her professional goals with childhood memories of visiting Walt Disney World. She soon accepted a position as a Third Officer aboard the Disney Treasure.
Starting her first contract, Alli quickly adapted to life onboard, learning the ins and outs of bridge operations and Disney’s unique culture. Through ongoing training, mentorship, and hands-on experience, she steadily grew into her role. “Disney has helped me grow from a cadet into the officer I am today,” she shares.
Now on her second contract, Alli has settled into a daily routine that includes two four-hour watch shifts—one in the early morning and another in the late afternoon. These hours give her a front-row seat to both sunrise and sunset. “It’s the best view on the ship,” she says.
Her responsibilities are critical to the ship’s operation. During arrivals and departures, she helps prepare the bridge for maneuvers and closely monitors the ship’s position. She also plays a role in safety, conducting inspections and assisting with training new crew members. “It’s rewarding because I get to work with people from all over the ship,” she explains.
When she’s off duty, Alli enjoys relaxing on the sun deck, staying active in the gym, playing guitar, or exploring ports when time allows.
One moment that stands out most to her? Her very first departure from Port Canaveral. Watching the sail-away celebration as a guest, then stepping onto the bridge shortly after, was unforgettable. “That’s where the real magic happens,” she says. “I get to combine Disney magic with my dream of navigating ships every day.”
For aspiring maritime professionals, Alli encourages getting involved and saying yes to new opportunities. “It’s those extra moments where you learn the most,” she advises.
Today, her journey has come full circle. Alli recently returned to Texas A&M Maritime Academy—this time representing Disney Cruise Line at a career fair. Sharing her story with current cadets, she’s now inspiring the next generation to follow their own path to sea.
