From Texas Thespians to Disney Cruise Line Caroline's Journey and Audition Tips
Every year, thousands of passionate high school theatre students gather at the Texas Thespians State Festival to perform, compete, and celebrate their shared love of the stage. These events provide invaluable opportunities to hone skills, network, and dream big about future careers in performing arts.
One such alum is Caroline, now a talented performer with Disney Cruise Line. Starting dance training at age three, she explored ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary styles. In middle school, she discovered acting, which unlocked new dimensions of storytelling and expression.
"Every class, rehearsal, and show built my discipline, creativity, and abilities," Caroline says. "Those experiences laid the foundation for landing my dream role with Disney."
A pivotal moment came during a Disney workshop at the Texas Thespians State Festival. Hearing directly from a casting director about his own journey—from auditions to performances and career growth within the company—inspired her deeply. "Right then, I knew this was my path," she recalls.
Confident in her direction, Caroline auditioned for Disney Cruise Line as soon as she turned 18. She attended two Character Performer auditions and found the process welcoming, supportive, and full of positive energy. "It wasn't just my technical training that helped," she explains. "It was the self-confidence and unique qualities I could offer. Getting the offer felt like every hour of practice and every dream finally aligned."
After accepting the role, Caroline headed to Toronto for intensive rehearsals. She collaborated with creative teams to master choreography, character work, and the signature Disney storytelling magic. By the end, she felt fully prepared and excited to bring joy to guests onboard.
One of her most cherished memories happened when her parents sailed to see her perform. Caroline and her mom had bonded over repeated viewings of Frozen during her childhood. Learning that Frozen, A Musical Spectacular was part of the lineup on the Disney Wonder filled them both with excitement. During the show, Caroline spotted her mom in the audience—singing along, beaming, and tearing up in the finale. "Our eyes met, and seeing her emotion was incredibly moving," Caroline shares. "It was a full-circle moment: performing in the story that sparked so much of our Disney love."
Working for Disney Cruise Line has brought unexpected emotional depth. While she anticipated the thrill of performing, Caroline was surprised by how profoundly it touches her to witness guests' joy firsthand. Seeing families light up reminds her why she pursues this craft.
The role has fostered tremendous personal growth. Caroline has developed professionalism, adaptability, and resilience in a demanding, fast-paced ship environment. She approaches every challenge with confidence and views each performance as a chance to improve. Above all, she's learned the profound impact of live entertainment.
The biggest challenge? Sustaining peak energy and consistency day after day amid a busy onboard schedule. Yet, when she sees audiences laughing, smiling, and fully immersed, it makes every effort worthwhile. "Creating lasting memories for guests is the ultimate reward," she says.
For aspiring performers eyeing Disney auditions, Caroline offers this key advice: "Show up as your authentic self. The casting team wants your unique energy, skills, and passion for performing. Lead with that, and the rest follows naturally."
To current Texas Thespians attendees, she adds: "Embrace every learning opportunity and really absorb the casting directors' stories—they can change everything, just like they did for me."
Disney values these events for building talent pipelines. Stephen, Senior Manager of Talent Casting Strategy & Integration, notes: "We present Disney opportunities as realistic next steps for young artists. Many need to see the path to believe it's possible, so we love outlining it at festivals like Texas Thespians."
In workshops, the team seeks students who bring full commitment, make bold creative choices, and show strong potential. The aim is for participants to leave with clearer insight into Disney auditions and post-high-school career options.
