How Disney Cruise Line Is Inspiring the Next Generation of Bahamian Leaders

Disney Cruise Line is helping open doors for the next generation of Bahamian professionals by connecting students with real-world experiences in the cruise, culinary, hospitality and maritime industries.

Through partnerships with the University of The Bahamas and LJM Maritime Academy, Disney Cruise Line is giving aspiring chefs, future mariners and young hospitality professionals opportunities to explore careers, learn from experienced crew members and see firsthand what it takes to work aboard a Disney cruise ship.

From behind-the-scenes galley tours aboard the Disney Dream to exploring the bridge and engine room of the Disney Destiny, these experiences bring classroom lessons to life while helping students discover new possibilities for their futures.

Inside the Disney Dream:

Future Chefs Explore Culinary Careers

Disney Cruise Line has worked with the University of The Bahamas to introduce culinary students to the opportunities available in the cruise and hospitality industries. Through its College of Tourism, Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Leisure Management (The CALM), the university helps prepare students for careers in food service, tourism and hospitality.

Since 2019, Disney Cruise Line has welcomed culinary students aboard its ships for behind-the-scenes galley tours and conversations with executive chefs and culinary leaders. These experiences provide a closer look at the teamwork, creativity and professional skills required to serve thousands of guests at sea.

As part of the University of The Bahamas' Culinary Week, students recently boarded the Disney Dream to meet Chef Andras and Chef Kamben and learn more about the many career opportunities available in Disney Cruise Line's culinary operations.

The experience also included Disney Cruise Line's “Anyone Can Cook” demonstration, led by Chef Khemraj and Chef Antoine. Students watched the preparation of a signature dish, observed professional cooking techniques and had the opportunity to engage directly with Disney chefs.

Beyond seeing how meals are prepared aboard a cruise ship, students gained valuable insight into the culinary careers that can take them from the classroom to a professional galley.

Dean Mario Adderly of The CALM expressed the university's appreciation for Disney Cruise Line's ongoing support.

“University of The Bahamas is deeply grateful to Disney Cruise Line,” Adderly said, highlighting the company's support of The CALM Week and the value of giving students the opportunity to observe front-of-house, back-of-house, and food and beverage operations in action.

The partnership helps connect academic learning with practical industry experience, giving aspiring culinary and hospitality professionals a better understanding of the opportunities ahead.

Future Mariners Go Behind the Scenes

Aboard Disney Destiny

The culinary industry is only one of the career paths Disney Cruise Line is helping students explore. The company also works with LJM Maritime Academy to support the development of future maritime professionals in The Bahamas.

Through scholarships, summer programming and shipboard educational experiences, students have opportunities to learn about ship operations and the wide range of technical and navigational careers that keep cruise ships moving.

Recently, 38 cadets from LJM Maritime Academy stepped aboard the Disney Destiny for a special educational tour.

The visit gave the aspiring mariners an opportunity to explore areas that most cruise guests never see. Cadets met with the ship's Engineering Officer and toured the engine room, gaining a closer look at the systems and technical expertise required to operate a modern cruise ship.

They also visited the bridge, where they learned about ship navigation, steering and the responsibilities involved in safely guiding a vessel at sea.

And because this was a Disney experience, the tour ended with a memorable surprise: a special appearance by Captain Mickey Mouse!

For students preparing for maritime careers, the visit offered a valuable look at the people, technology and teamwork behind the guest experience on a Disney cruise.

From The Bahamas to Walt Disney World:

Creating Career Pathways

Disney Cruise Line's investment in future Bahamian professionals extends beyond its ships.

Through its collaboration with the University of The Bahamas, the company supports the Leading Light Program, which offers hospitality, management and job-readiness courses at no cost to participants.

Initially launched in Eleuthera in 2024, the program has expanded to include students in Abaco. Its focus on practical skills and employment readiness helps participants prepare for opportunities in hospitality and other industries.

Leslie Lopez, Disney Cruise Line's Manager of HR Bahamas, plays an important role in bringing these initiatives to life.

“As a Bahamian myself, I understand the meaning of the opportunities provided by Disney to support the career paths of young people in The Bahamas,” Lopez shared. “Disney Cruise Line’s commitment to introducing young professionals from our islands to the hospitality and maritime industries has been incredibly impactful.”

Lopez also played a key role in bringing the first group of Bahamian students to participate in a Disney program at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Through Disney Programs, students and recent graduates can gain professional experience and leadership development while learning from one of the world's best-known entertainment and hospitality organizations.

The Bahamian participants gained hands-on experience across Walt Disney World Parks & Resorts in areas including food and beverage, custodial operations and merchandise.

Their experience extended beyond their daily responsibilities. Students connected with cast members and guests from around the world, participated in seminars featuring Disney leaders, volunteered through Disney VoluntEARS and explored attractions and destinations in Central Florida.

They also had the opportunity to tour the Disney Wish, providing another connection to Disney Cruise Line and the broader opportunities available within Disney's hospitality and entertainment businesses.

Together, these programs help students develop transferable skills, build professional networks and explore potential career paths both at sea and on land.

Disney Cruise Line's Longstanding

Commitment to The Bahamas

Disney Cruise Line's relationship with The Bahamas goes beyond the destinations its ships visit.

Since 1998, Disney Cruise Line has emphasized supporting the port communities it visits around the world, including communities throughout The Bahamas.

While guests experience the islands' beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and welcoming communities, Disney Cruise Line also invests in initiatives intended to create lasting benefits for local residents.

Its educational partnerships, youth programs and workforce development efforts help introduce young people to career possibilities while strengthening connections between the cruise line and the communities that welcome its ships.

From culinary students learning alongside Disney chefs to maritime cadets exploring the bridge of the Disney Destiny, these experiences demonstrate how partnerships can help prepare the next generation of professionals.

As Disney Cruise Line continues to operate in The Bahamas, investments in education, professional development and local talent remain an important part of its broader community efforts.
