It was the capital of one of the ancient provinces of the kingdom of Galicia and was even the region´s capital when King Garcia set up his court here. You will enjoy strolling through its quiet streets flanked by stately houses with traditional balconies and galleries.

  • The main monuments are the gothic churches of Santa María do Azougue and San Francisco, at either end of the square, with a stone roadside cross between them. The church of San Francisco, recognized as the finest Galician example of the mendicant Gothic style, with the tomb of its sponsor, Fernan Pérez de Andrade, resting on a bear and a boar, animals that symbolized the lineage of his family.

  • Continue the tour towards the 18th century Pazo de Mariñán. Located on the banks of the Betanzos and Mandeo rivers, it is perhaps one of the best Pazos in Galicia and Spain. Historical events of this location help us to identify the Pazo’s most famous owner, the influential Gómez Pérez das Marinas, who lived here during the fifteenth century and remembered as the invincible defender of the city of A Coruña against the attacks from the Count of Benavente. As soon as we enter the grounds, we will discover unique gardens, which include giant shade creating banana trees, walnut trees from India and huge eucalyptus trees, all of which meet us at the entrance to these grounds. Further, along the path we will find the Pazo´s Chapel, which originally built by Costanza das Marinas in the fifth teen century in honor of Saint Roque. It gives a spectacular view of the sea and of the main garden, which is an architectural jewel. These stairways lead to the owner’s once private gardens with fountains, busts and statutes of the Count of Mos.

  • After a 45-minute bus ride, you will reach Pontedeume.

  • Pontedeume is a charming little coastal village, located in the Galician Rias Altas. It is the perfect combination of mountain, river and sea landscapes.   • Begin with a guided walking tour of the old town. Walk around parts of this lovely city passing Plaza de Azcarraga with its stone fountain and beautiful Town Hall.

  • During your walk-in old town, you will pass by the convent of Santo Domingo (baroque style), the church of Santa Maria do Campo and the church of Santiago before reaching Maria Pita Square, named for the lady who defeated Sir Francis Drake.
