More Than Hiring and Firing A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Disney Cruise Line’s Shipboard HR Team
When guests think about Human Resources, they might picture job interviews, hiring decisions and employee paperwork. But aboard Disney Cruise Line, the role of a Human Resources Manager goes far beyond what many people imagine.
For Zdeni, a Human Resources Manager aboard the Disney Dream, her job is about supporting the people who make the magic happen every day. From helping crew members advance their careers to working alongside shipboard leadership and creating a positive onboard community, her responsibilities touch nearly every department.
“One common misconception is that shipboard HR is only responsible for hiring and firing crew members,” Zdeni explains. “A lot of guests have asked me about that, and they’re surprised when I share the full scope of my role.”
In reality, shipboard Human Resources is a multifaceted position that combines employee development, leadership support, operational strategy and crew engagement. And with a ship full of people from different backgrounds and cultures, no two days are quite the same.
HR Is About More Than People Management
One of the most interesting aspects of Zdeni’s position is the opportunity to work with nearly every area of the ship. Her assigned departments can change from one contract to another, giving her the chance to understand different areas of shipboard operations.
During a recent assignment supporting Hotel Operations, Zdeni partnered with the dining room leadership team to identify opportunities to improve the guest experience. By reviewing guest feedback and working with leaders to introduce additional training and role-playing exercises, she helped dining room Cast Members strengthen their skills and continue developing professionally.
Her work also extends to implementing company policies and supporting projects that involve multiple departments.
“I am always partnering with the lines of business when rolling out any policy update and will always welcome more opportunities to be part of a cross-departmental project,” she shares.
Another important part of her role involves reviewing crew data and identifying opportunities for professional development.
While analyzing participation in Disney Cruise Line’s Emerging Leaders program, which helps prepare crew members for future leadership positions, Zdeni noticed an increase in the number of participants successfully completing the program and earning promotions.
That presented an opportunity to improve the transition into their new roles. She proposed a more dedicated onboarding approach, including additional attention to their individual training needs.
The result was a smoother transition for crew members moving into leadership positions and another example of how shipboard HR helps support career growth throughout Disney Cruise Line.
Creating a Community Far From Home
Working aboard a Disney cruise ship is different from working at a traditional office. For crew members, the ship isn't just their workplace; it's also their home for months at a time.
That makes building a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment especially important.
According to Zdeni, the diversity onboard is one of the things that makes the experience so unique.
“The culture is very diverse as we do have about 60 nationalities onboard,” she explains. “It is like a micro-society, and everyone has a part to play whether at work or during free time.”
With crew members representing so many different countries and cultures, the HR team plays an important role in helping foster a sense of community.
After completing multiple contracts, Zdeni has experienced firsthand how meaningful those relationships can become.
One of her favorite memories came when she returned to the ship after vacation. For the next two or three weeks, crew members from different departments continued stopping by to welcome her back.
Considering that many HR responsibilities involve investigations, employee concerns and difficult conversations, those unexpected greetings meant a lot.
“It warmed my heart as the nature of the HR job onboard is, at times, vastly focused on case work, investigation and ‘less fun stuff,’” she recalls. “It felt really great to see genuine, happy faces greeting me back onboard and made me realize just how many people we do interact with and influence – almost everyone in all departments.”
It's a reminder that even in a role that sometimes requires difficult decisions, the relationships built along the way can make a lasting difference.
Sometimes, One Conversation Can Change Everything
Perhaps the most meaningful part of working in shipboard HR is having the opportunity to make a difference in someone's career and life.
Zdeni shared an example of a crew member who was facing the possibility of losing their position with Disney Cruise Line.
Following an honest conversation about the situation and what it would mean to leave the company, the crew member had a change of perspective. They found the courage to acknowledge their situation, take responsibility and express their commitment to making things right.
That conversation ultimately led to a second chance.
The crew member was able to remain with Disney Cruise Line and, many months later, was still working onboard.
For Zdeni, moments like that are among the most rewarding parts of her job.
“It warms my heart when we make a difference in someone’s life and help them grow,” she says.
The People Behind the Disney Cruise Line Experience
While guests see the entertainment, dining, characters and unforgettable experiences that make a Disney cruise special, there's an enormous team of people working behind the scenes to make it all happen.
Shipboard Human Resources Managers like Zdeni play an important role in supporting that team.
Whether helping a crew member take the next step in their career, working with department leaders to improve operations, creating a welcoming onboard culture or giving someone an opportunity for a fresh start, their influence reaches far beyond a traditional HR job description.
It's another interesting look at the many different careers and responsibilities that come together behind the scenes aboard Disney Cruise Line.
After all, creating magical experiences for guests starts with supporting the people who bring that magic to life. Thanks to Life at Disney for the original article and photos.
