Mount Rustmore

🗿 The “Origin Story” (Unofficial but Widely Accepted)

Mount Rustmore is considered an Imagineering sight gag, created during the original development of Castaway Cay in the late 1990s. When Disney was transforming Gorda Cay into a themed private island, Imagineers intentionally added visual jokes and whimsical details to make the island feel playful rather than pristine.

Mount Rustmore fits that philosophy perfectly:

  • It’s a tongue-in-cheek parody of Mount Rushmore

  • Made from weathered nautical buoys (hence “Rustmore” instead of “Rushmore”)

  • Featuring classic Disney characters instead of U.S. presidents

There’s no backstory plaque, no storyline in the Navigator, and no canon explanation — it exists purely as a fun environmental joke for guests to discover.

🎨 Why Those Characters?

The four faces — Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto — represent Disney’s classic core characters:

  • They were instantly recognizable to families

  • They tied the island visually back to the ships

  • They fit the “found objects” maritime theme of Castaway Cay

🏝️ Why Disney Never Gave It a Formal Story

This was very intentional:

  • Imagineers often add “wink-and-you-miss-it” details without explanation

  • It encourages guest discovery and conversation

  • It keeps the island from feeling overly scripted

Think of it the same way Disney parks have hidden props, fake backstories, or visual puns that exist just because they’re fun.

📸 How It Evolved

While the structure itself hasn’t changed much:

  • Disney later leaned into it as a photo spot

  • Characters and photographers began using it as a backdrop

  • It became one of the island’s unofficial icons

Mount Rustmore is one of the most iconic photo spots and landmarks on Disney Cruise Line’s private island Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. It’s a fun, themed take on the famous Mount Rushmore in the U.S., but with a playful Disney twist for cruisers visiting the island during their stop.

🏝️ What It Is

  • A decorative landmark near the family beach area — not an actual mountain, but a themed display that serves as a meet-and-greet and photo backdrop.

  • It’s made up of four large buoys or sculptures, each painted with the face of a classic Disney character: Mickey, Pluto, Donald, and Goofy.

    • The Mickey buoy (round) has his signature ears.

    • The Goofy buoy features a representation of his hat in its design.

📸 Why It’s Popular

  • Photography & Characters: Cast members often position photographers nearby, and Disney characters sometimes meet guests here for photos and greetings.

  • Iconic Visual: It’s one of the best recognizable spots on the island — perfect for family selfies or group shots with the ship in the background.

📍 Where to Find It

  • Near the Castaway Cay family beach — one of the first themed landmarks you’ll see after you head off the tram or walk from the ship’s dock.

  • Close to other key island features like the tram route stops and souvenir shops.

Mount Rustmore is a great example of how Disney adds a bit of whimsy and character storytelling even to something as simple as a beach landmark — and it’s a must-stop spot for many cruisers on their Castaway Cay day!
