Destination Details

  • Brush up on the fine points of this popular vacation spot.

    • The oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction, San Juan offers a warm climate throughout the year, with sizzling temperatures in the summer. Mountains cover over half of the island terrain, but the geography of Puerto Rico also includes rain forests, deserts and caves.

  • Local Culture and Flavor

    • San Juan is Puerto Rico’s capital and most populated city. A destination where reminders of the past harmonize with conveniences of the present, the districts of San Juan are as unique as the diversity of cultures that influence them. Varied styles of architecture create an eclectic cityscape, with Spanish fortifications, colonial offices, Art Deco buildings and modern structures.

  • Past and Present

    • Christened “San Juan Bautista” by New World explorer Christopher Columbus in 1493, the island later inherited the name “Puerto Rico,” or “rich port” for the gold that was found in its waters. San Juan functioned as a crucial military locale for the Spanish who constructed fortress walls that helped thwart invading Dutch pirates, British fleets and French attackers. Control of the island didn’t fall into the hands of the United States until the conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Today, San Juan is a tropical tourism hotspot filled with romantic touches of history and the modern amenities one would expect of a capital city.
